This card is a part of the Underdark. With an altered text and the same special power, this card is a reprint of Menzoberranzan (2/3rd).
With its ability to be played at any time, this realm can be used by any deck, allowing the player to place more realms in his formation faster than his opponents. As a result of this realm's popularity, there is a chance that opponents may put it into play first.
Both champions and allies who are flyers are prohibited from attacking Menzoberranzan. Therefore, it is best played in the second or third rank of a formation, behind other realms, where an attacking champion must use a special movement power to reach it. In most cases, this restricts all attacks on the realm to earthwalkers, since flyers cannot attack, and swimming champions cannot access the realm.
Cards that work well with Menzoberranzan are those that further hinder champions based on their movement capabilities. When attached to Menzoberranzan, Border Forts (198/3rd) prevents almost anyone from attacking the realm it is attached to, so it is almost impossible for anyone to attack it. Combinations like this are most effective when Menzoberranzan is the lead realm, blocking attacks from the back ranks. Adding The Triton Throne (65/DU) to the realm is also a good idea. In addition, The Song of the Dragonlance (22/DU) dungeon card works well with Menzoberranzan, limiting attacks against it to earthwalkers, although swimmers can attack it if exposed.
Even if a realm has already been played in phase 1, Menzoberranzan can be played at any time. As a result, this makes the Menzoberranzan a "must-have" card for every deck. When Map of Life (413/3rd) is in play, Menzoberranzan cannot be used.
Flyers cannot attack Menzoberranzan because he is immune to them. The White Weird (51/DU), a flyer ally, can, however, be used as an event to remove Menzoberranzan's holding.
When Takhisis's Helmet Power (18/Dl-chase) is in play, Menzoberranzan may be attacked by flyers.
As with Menzoberranzan, the player with priority must have the opportunity to play first during this "Menzo pause".
Useful tip: Having Border Forts attached to Menzoberranzan makes attacking almost impossible.
Drizzt Do'Urden (253/4th) hails from Menzoberranzan, which is also the home base of drow mercenary Jarlaxle (94/UD). In this city of chaos, all the leading drow houses are competing for power and for Lolth, the Spider Queen (166/3rd).
