Spellfire is home to many powerful magical creatures. One such creature is the Skeleton Mage - an ancient being of unknown origin and immense power. The Skeleton Mage lives in a great tower atop a mountain. For centuries, he had been known to grant wishes to those brave enough to seek him out but at a terrible price.
Legend said that Skeleton Mage's power came from the souls of those who sought his assistance, and it was by this means that he could grant even the most impossible of wishes. The cost, however, was high - another must be given in return for every desire made.
One day, a brave young man desperate for help decided to seek out the Skeleton Mage's power. He climbed the mountain and entered the tower, where he made his request: that he would be able to save his beloved from an incurable illness. The Skeleton Mage agreed, but he demanded something more for this wish. He asked for the young man's soul so that he could use it to power his magic and grant the wish.
The young man was desperate to save his beloved, and with a heavy heart, he agreed. The Skeleton Mage granted him the wish, but he took away the young man's life force in return. Deprived of his soul, the young man's body became a skeleton, a living reminder of what he had sacrificed to achieve his goal.
Years later it was discovered that within his tower were countless souls - including that of the young man who had paid such a terrible price. His soul was returned to him, and although his body remained a skeleton, his life force was restored.
The young man went on to live out the rest of his days in peace, but he never forgot the terrible price he had paid for the power of the Skeleton Mage. He often spoke of it as a lesson that should always be remembered. When power comes at too high a cost, it is always better to seek other means of achieving one's goals.
