Burned at the Stake

Play on any champion that does not have an icon ability to cast (i.e., Hero, Monster, etc.) just after they cast a spell. That champion is sent to the abyss or the player may discard three cards, at random, from hand to save the champion.

This is an old and copyrighted card, and it is restricted to use in the New Spellfire Game or official tournaments.

Burned at the Stake - an event against spells

arrow

This event has many interesting timing issues involved with it that has driven many players from using this card. This is too bad, since many “non-regular” spellcasting champions show up it tournament decks (like Cyric (92/FR), Iuz the Evil (167/1st), and Gib Reltub (20/NS-chase)).

This event even works against clerics casting wizard spells and wizards casting cleric spells. This event is played after the spell effect and counters are resolved (so you can still Re-target (389/4th) a spell cast by one of these champions and then Burn them at the Stake), and does not count as the single counter to the spell.

Assuming the Burned at the Stake is not countered, the controlling player has a choice to make. Either they send the non-immune champion to the Abyss, or have three cards randomly discarded from their hand.

If a player has two or fewer cards in their hand, they must send the champion to the Abyss. Using this card is a gamble however, as you can never be sure if the opponent will use spells or if they will use one of these types of champions.

This card does not work against the Geneva Conclave (2/PR), since it is not a champion casting the spell. While this card is powerful, it will rarely be used because of its gambling nature and because much more powerful events are available. However, just to be on the safe side, make sure you have the right type of champion casting each type of spell.
